THE STORY

AN UNUSUAL SUMMER DAY
Traditionally, in Ecuador’s highlands, the month of June marks the beginning of the dry season. However, Sunday, June 5th, 2022, felt like any other winter day.
I had heard that after the rain, lighting conditions become ideal for landscape photography. After a family lunch and with no set plan, I decided to head out and try my luck with the camera.
As I drove near the Cotopaxi Volcano, a storm was breaking out. The only thought running through my mind was that capturing an image of the volcano that day would be impossible, so I decided to continue further south. I remember stopping just before reaching the entrance to the city of Ambato. The afternoon was submerged in a palette of greys.
With no expectations, I couldn’t be disappointed; so, when it seemed a golden sunset was highly unlikely, I turned around and began the drive back home.

MOTHER NATURE: BEAUTIFUL AND UNPREDICTABLE
While passing by Laguna de Yambo, in the distance, the summit of Cotopaxi Volcano was visible. At least I knew I could see it clearly.
As I drove through the Salcedo area, thinking I would have a return trip like any other, I suddenly realized that fate had caught me off guard. Mother Nature reminds us again and again that her plans will always prevail over ours, completely stripping away the illusion of control we so firmly believe we have.
It is in these moments that we forget that, defying all logic, the most breathtaking sunset can suddenly appear before our eyes with unexpected speed.
A 5-MINUTE GIFT
The last rays of sunlight managed to break through the clouds, illuminating the western face of the volcano. I knew that, under ideal conditions, the most beautiful sunset light lasts no more than 15 minutes. But faced with such unusual and unpredictable circumstances, I had no idea how much time I would have.
Hastily, I parked in the best spot I could find. At that moment, the only option was to trust my experience, hope that luck would cover for any mistakes, and accept that only in this way can we respond to those fleeting moments that may never happen again. In the end, that fleeting light adorning the colossal peak lasted only about five minutes.

PHOTOGRAPHS THAT LAUNCHED A PROJECT
It took almost two and a half years before I could understand that those images I was able to capture—whether by luck or chance—not only represented a gift for me but would fulfill a deeper purpose: to serve as a bridge connecting those in need who don’t know how to ask for help with those who have the ability to assist but may not know how to find them.
